If God loves us, why is there so much pain in the world?

1 John 4:14-17, "And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like Him."

God is love. Of that I do not believe we can debate, after all, He gave His only Son to die on a cross so that each one of us may have eternal life and spend all eternity with a God that loves us in such an amazing way.

The problem is that God did not want a bunch of robots or mindless zombies so he gave us the ability to choose. Many people do not choose the love of God and the life of Christ Jesus. They live a selfish life gaining all they can and doing whatever they want. For some that means they choose to abuse drugs and alcohol. Family, friends and strangers suffer because of the abuse. Friends and family suffer as they watch the abuse continue to take its effect on the individual. The statistics are staggering for the number of deaths caused on the highway due to drug and alcohol abuse. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with taking prescribed drugs as we are told to by a doctor or having a drink or two. The problem is in the abuse of these items. 1 Corinthians 6:10 warns us that drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of God. Ephesians 5:18 tells us, Do not get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

We pollute this world daily with garbage, chemicals and hazardous toxins and say we are doing it all for the benefit of mankind. I believe we have for generations poisoned our earth and bodies until new diseases and genetic defects start showing up and when it happens to us or one we love, we ask God why? We were meant to be the caretakers of this world but instead we are destroying it.

We say we love God and yet there are starving children all over the world. We say we love God and yet there are thousands upon thousands of homeless people. This is what God has to say in 1 John 4:19-21, "We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, I love God but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must love his brother." There are many around the world that kill their brothers in the name of God but that is not what God calls us to.

God is love and we are to love as He has loved us. Until that happens, there will be sin that leads to pain and suffering. This is not God's will but the will of man. One day God promises to set all things right and to remove sin from the lives of His children so that what will be left is love. And now three things remain: faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love.
